When Aesop Rock debuted in the late 90s with Music For Earthworms and Appleseed, Blockhead was also a part of the process, not only as a producer, but also helping coordinate sales of the CDRs to hungry Hip Hop fans. Blockhead and Aesop continued to collaborate, creating an impressive list of songs along the way, including two of Aesopʼs most popular songs to date; “Daylight” and “None Shall Pass”. In recent years, Blockhead has contributed production, as well as remixes, to many of Aesopʼs solo releases and group projects, and Aesop has made a handful of guest features on Blockhead's solo projects, but in all that time, Aesop and Block had never done a full album together, until Garbology

Garbology came together over the course of the pandemic, and encapsulates the soundtrack of current times. As Aesop explains, “Garbology is defined as the study of the material discarded by a society to learn what it reveals about social or cultural patterns. I find a lot of parallels between that and the idea of picking up the pieces after a loss or period of intense unrest, and seeing whatʼs really there. Furthermore - the idea of digging through old, often neglected music from another time — with an ear tuned for taking in that data in a different way than your average listener — is exactly what Blockhead does.”

John Andrews is something of an open secret in a certain corner of the music scene: a versatile musician and animator. A film school drop out whose work hat-tips tradition as much as outsider anti-aesthetics. He's spent over a decade on the DIY circuit, playing early house shows alongside then up-and-coming peers Weyes Blood and Daniel Bachman. Today he is still out there projecting his sketchy hand-drawn animations during his performances in coffee shops, small galleries and non-traditional venues. Andrews' painterly approach now introduces the listener to his version of New York City, the place he was bound to end up after years of dwelling in Pennsylvania farm towns and New Hampshire barns. There is handmade vibrancy to the world he's imagined here: intimate moments seen from the interior, looking outward from hole-in-the-wall restaurants, theaters and the fragments of peace found within the restless and dirty street corners.Love For The Underdog, his aptly titled fourth release with the Woodsist label, was tracked live to tape in various studios and apartments across the Empire State with help from his bandmates in Cut Worms' touring outfit, Max Clarke, Keven Lareau and Noah Bond. Buoyant melodies are supported by timeless string arrangements, translated from Andrews' head to page with the help of friend Simon Hanes. The string quartet follows the tradition of Francoise Hardy, Harry Nilsson, Margo Guryan and Belle and Sebastian, giving the whole thing a cinematic ambience with stark shadows of an Edward Hopper painting. The lyrics tie together narratives of cynical heroes and troubled lovers. Put on the record and sink into well-worn red velvet theater seats, when the lights go down and the flickering of projectors run the title: Love For The Underdog, indeed.

Limited gold colored vinyl LP pressing. Reissue. Formed by guitarist Michael Amott after his departure from the now legendary Carcass and years before the introduction of their amazing German female singer Angela Gossow, Arch Enemy first garnered praise with the metal milestone Black Earth in 1996. This first album of a band which would later become one of the biggest of it's genre, featuring original singer Johan Liiva, was propelled by flawlessly technical dual guitars and a previously unheard mixture of melody and aggression - an alchemy that redefined the limits of melodic death metal. Black Earth was the foundation of a unique trademark sound which helped the band to quickly solidify their reputation as one of the genre's elites, which it is nowadays.

Limited silver colored vinyl LP pressing. Reissue. Arch Enemy are the ultimate in Swedish retro thrash/death. The northerners bludgeon old school banger riffs of Slayer and Destruction format with an ease and joy of playing from the soul that the neck muscles almost begin to rotate by themselves and manage, incredibly, to insert between the chainsaw chord sequences again and again two-part melodic licks, which remind more than once of early Iron Maiden records and spherical Death songs. Stigmata is further enhanced by the great song ideas and the wonderfully aggressive, but never overdone vocals. And best of all, these guys can play like hell. Mastermind Michael Amott (Spiritual Beggars/ex-Carcass) and his brother Christopher are one of the best guitar duos in the metal scene and know how to use their technical skills very impressively, yet always song-serving. An absolute must for Thrash/Death fans!

Austere are back. The Australians return with their third album and they are as laconic and without any pretensions as when they went into extended hibernation after the release of their sophomore full-length "To Lay like Old Ashes" in 2009. Entitled "Corrosion of Hearts", the new tracks stay true to the path that Austere have carved for themselves out of solid black metal bedrock. The multi-layered and harsh yet often dreamlike guitar tapestries woven by Mitchell Keepin are complemented by the emotive drumming of Tim Yatras, who also contributes keyboard splashes and cinematic soundscapes. In the typical manner of these Australians, their songs are still meandering, flowing streams of musical thought of epic proportions. On "Corrosion of Hearts", Austere's brand of black metal has evolved into a more mature and defined form of expression, which is hardly surprising as both musicians were active in other bands during their hiatus. The duo also took more time to craft their new songs into exactly what they were supposed to sound like than before. With greater experience comes more determination. Austere grew out of an existing solo-project of multi-instrumentalist and singer Desolate alias Mitchell Keepin who joined forces with drummer, keyboarder, and vocalist Sorrow aka Tim Yatras in 2005. Although the Australians had quickly attracted an equally loyal and substantial following during their first few years, Austere decided to go on a prolonged hiatus before resuming activities in 2021. As a first sign of their rebirth, the band released a compilation of their earlier material as an artbook edition entitled "Towards the Great Unknown" via Lupus Lounge. With rekindled passion and a clear vision, Austere are finally ready to release their eagerly and long-awaited third full-length "Corrosion of Hearts". Beautiful yet proudly grim, a fierce black storm rises from Down Under.

Vinyl LP pressing. Already during Basie's lifetime, some of his most loyal followers formed the All Stars. The alto-saxophonist Marshall Royal, Basie's eternal concertmaster, took the lead in this. (Marshall probably played the same role for Basie as Johnny Hodges did for Duke Ellington. He passed away in 1995). The musicians performing that evening had for many years, some (like Royal) even for decades, co-fathered and influenced the Basie-effect, so important for the history of big bands in swing. Both trumpeters represent the different concepts that were always present side by side in Basie's orchestra: relaxed elegance (represented by Harry Edison, whom the world of jazz called Sweets for obvious reasons), and the hands-on severeness of Joe Newman. Besides Royal, who had always been one of the breathing jazz saxophonist like Coleman Hawkins or Ben Webster, here at the Fabrik the Kansas-City-veteran Buddy Tate and Billy Mitchell, who was more at home in modern bebop, invoke two other aspects of the Basie-universe. Benny Powell rounds out the spectrum of the wind section. As always in Basie's band (and also here) it manifests itself in full-bodied arrangements, and by supporting the soloists in the background. Nat Pierce, the pianist, delicately adapts to Basie's consistent frugality and restraint. Bassist John Heard and drummer Gus Johnson establish the rhythm-dimension of Basie's spell, even without the magician Green.

Bedroom

Thread

Vinyl: $20.98 Buy

Thread, Noah Kittinger's fourth LP under the Bedroom moniker, is the album the singer/songwriter & producer has strived to release throughout his career. It's a stunning portrait of self-exploration, as Kittinger aims to find his place in life after a tumultuous period both in his personal life and artistry. "This record is the result of many years of dedication to the craft and to continuing this career, of me being pretty creatively lost for a long time and then finding my new self in music that I was searching for," says Kittinger. "It's a testament to independent artistry. [Bedroom] isn't an industry-designed project. Thread is a very organic body of work that is the result of many years of just pushing." While self-producing in an at-home studio allowed Kittinger to reach the depths of his creativity, it was during his trips back to North Carolina that Thread began to take shape. "I think that there was just something about removing myself from that frequency that's within a city, and just literally being in a house in the middle of nowhere, and just having a very limited amount of time and stuff to work on, that I think is what really brings out the important stuff," explains Kittinger. In that time in serene isolation, Kittinger realized that to break his writer's block, he had to process the emotional pain he'd experienced over the past couple of years through his writing, leading to his most intimate and compelling songwriting yet. "It was like a choice of [saying] 'This is what I'm going through right now.' This record is me very bluntly talking about what it is that I'm going through. I would say it is my most personal record," says Kittinger. Kittinger has been making music as Bedroom for the past decade. He recorded much of his music from the comfort of his bedroom as a teen, including "In My Head," a single originally released in January of 2013 (re-released in 2017) that organically became a hit online and was introduced to a wider audience when it became a viral sensation on TikTok in 2021. Though Kittinger is proud that his early work resonated so strongly with fans, he now wants to reintroduce Bedroom as a "more mature and better version" of himself as an artist. "I've grown up a lot as a person and as an artist, and I think this record reflects that. I'm proud of that," says Kittinger.

Tommy Bolin is one of rock music's greatest guitar legends. His unique approach encompassed all styles of hard rock, blues, classical, progressive, fusion and jazz. During his short time on planet Earth, he delivered the goods as the dynamic guitarist with Zephyr, then his work with the prog-rock groove of Energy. His popularity grew immensely with his highly acclaimed guitar work on Billy Cobham's Spectrum, further trailblazing his funk-infused rock guitar playing with The James Gang, ultimately hammering out the big prize as lead guitarist of the heavy metal rockers Deep Purple. One rare night in Albany, New York, our guitar hero once again proved that he was a natural performer and a virtuosic guitarist of the classic rock era. With his amazing band featuring Mark Stein, Norma Jean Bell, Jimmy Haslip and brother Johnnie Bolin, Tommy Bolin championed hard rockin' renditions of his classics "Teaser," "You Told Me That You Loved Me," and "Post Toastee." For the first time ever on super limited edition vinyl, Friday Music is pleased to announce The Tommy Bolin Band's Live 9/19/76. Mastered impeccably by long-time Tommy Bolin reissue producer Joe Reagoso from the official Tommy Bolin Archives tapes, you will clearly see how Tommy influenced generations of musicians. Léonore Boulanger studied drama, experimental jazz improvisation and Persian music in Paris. Her music reflects her wide interest in African folk and in composers such as George Crumb, Teiji Ito, Harry Partch and singer Meredith Monk. For their fifth album, "Un lièvre était un très cher baiser " Léonore Boulanger & Jean-Daniel Botta with percussionist Laurent Sériès compose and decompose a set of fragments of the outsider art poetry of Ernst Herbeck from Gugging center in Austria. Small formats for the movement, singed in German as in a Kindergarten Krautrock : imaginary folk, music boxes, r'n'b medievalism, motets and futuristic madrigals set up like hopscotches, Byzantine mathematics.

Vinyl LP pressing. Includes digital download. Over the past decade, Braids have devoted themselves to exploring their art, together, making for one of the more daring and fluid catalogs in contemporary experimental pop. JUNO Award winners and twice-shortlisted for the Polaris Music Prize, Braids see their story as a series of actions and reactions, a collective expression that swings like a pendulum between process-driven precision and open-hearted freeness. For their fifth full-length, Euphoric Recall, the band embraced the latter, intuitively pursuing the playful joy and spontaneity they'd been craving in the absence of live performances - the "kinetic and exciting" (The New York Times) energy that's become their superpower across over 500 shows played worldwide. Standell-Preston found herself in the rush of new love, drawing generously from her tender heart space, which Smith and Tufts, renewed by recent collaborations and studio work, understood intrinsically. As songs emerged, the rhythms and textures became brighter and looser, unhurried and brimming with life, the result of greenlighting the ideas that simply felt good the second they hit the air. Often written on the spot in just a few takes, Standell-Preston's lyrics are vivid, exhilarating, and evocative, a directness indicative of fully knowing oneself and engaging the moment. Organic and electronic elements weave in and out, shading a rich universe without crowding it. Self-produced and for the first time composing and arranging string parts, the band welcomed the guiding flourishes of an ensemble on cello, viola, and violins. The sound is lush and sprawling yet captured with in-the-room clarity; it grooves viscerally, freer, and wholly anew. Braids abandoned strategy, burned it down, and realized their love record. Love, all of it; the unbound bliss, the budding impulses, and the messy imperfections, a supernova swirled up in a suite of bold, patient, symphonic pop songs surrendered to the present, Euphoric Recall.

The Show Original Soundtrack is a collection of pulsing, darkly lush, and banging tracks, which came to be following Broder's first foray into the world of indie film via his collaboration with legendary writer Alan Moore (Watchmen, Jerusalem) on Moore's original screenplay of the same name (Broder also previously scored Moore's semi-biographical audio-novella, Unearthing). Following the release of The Show, Broder decided to remix and re-structure the film's original score into pieces that had their own identity as a standalone project, pulling in some amazing guests, while still retaining the spirit and mood of Moore's singular worldview. As a result of Broder's vision, The Show Original Soundtrack features collaborations with serpentwithfeet, Moor Mother, Kazu Makino from Blonde Redhead, and billy woods (Armand Hammer), Denzel Curry, Dua Saleh, and Haleek Maul.

Playing Americana steeped with potent branches of blues, rock, glam and country music, Mya Byrne is every bit the voice of the outsider that built the foundation of the genre, where we behold stages beaming with the light of those who are so willing to stand tall and confident in the entirety of their truth. Here Byrne stands too. Americana has many champions, but there are scarce few like Byrne; a queer trans woman creating ripples that will find themselves born again and again as waves. On Rhinestone Tomboy, we are treated to a portrait painted with shades of Byrne's youth, one spent listening to stacks of her mama's dusty 45s, and thrift store 8-tracks blasting from blown speakers out the window of an old Chevy. Songs that opened the trailhead to a lifelong journey that informed Byrne's musical landscape.
