Limited Loser Edition on transparent cotton-candy swirl vinyl. If you're looking for a raw, sugary blast of distorted pop, look no further than Weird Nightmare. The debut album from METZ guitarist and vocalist Alex Edkins contains all of his main band's bite with an unexpected, yet totally satisfying, sweetness. Imagine The Amps covering Big Star, or the gloriously hissy miniature epics of classic-era Guided by Voices combined with the bombast of Copper Blue- era Sugar-just tons of red-line distortion cut with the type of tunecraft that thrills the moment it hits your ears. These ten songs showcase a new side of Edkins' already-established songwriting, but even though the bulk of Weird Nightmare was recorded during the COVID-19 pandemic some of it's tunes date back to 2013 in demo form. "Hooks and melody have always been a big part of my writing, but they really became the main focus this time" he explains. "It was about doing what felt natural." To be clear: Weird Nightmare is not a "pandemic album," but an album-some of which had been gestating for quite a while-that just so happened to be recorded during the pandemic. "I had always planned on finishing these songs, but being unable to tour with METZ, and forced to lock down, really gave me a push." After days spent homeschooling his son, Edkins would drive to the METZ rehearsal room and tinker deep into the night on these songs' deceptively simple structures and rich, static-laden textures. "It was a godsend for me," he states about the creative process. "The hours would disappear and I would get lost in the music and record. It was a beautiful escape."Weird Nightmare is, in it's own way, a study in extremes: Edkins' melodic instincts and penchant for dissonance are both turned up to the max throughout, the latter reflecting not only the barn-burning tendencies of METZ, but Alex's own sonic predilections. "It doesn't sound right to my ears until it's pushed over the edge." He also cites other artists who are masterful at mixing the sublime and the punishing-Kim Deal and Scout Niblett among them-as influences on his own songwriting. "My favorite songs are the simple ones," he explains. "I've never been attracted to virtuosity or technicality. Certain songs have the power to lift your spirits like nothing else can. I wanted to create that type of song." A few guests pitch in on Weird Nightmare: Canadian alt-pop genius Chad VanGaalen adds his unmistakable touch to the ever-escalating "Oh No," while Alicia Bognanno of Bully lends her distinctive pipes to the thrashing "Wrecked," a collaboration that effectively saved the song. "I almost didn't put it on the album because I thought it was missing something," Edkins explains. "I sent it to Alicia and she lifted it way up." And taking risks and reaching out of Edkins' comfort zone was the name of the game when it came to making Weird Nightmare. "I found myself doing new things I didn't have the guts to do before, recording everything by myself and trusting all of my musical instincts," he states. "I think when music manifests quickly, a certain amount of honesty automatically comes along with it. When it is a purely instinctual creation, there is no opportunity to obscure the truth."

Nicki Bluhm's creative confidence and authentic vocals are front and center on AVONDALE DRIVE, her sophomore solo album and the follow up to her critically-acclaimed 2018 release To Rise You Gotta Fall. The native San Franciscan who now calls Tennessee home possesses a gorgeously emotive voice and her clear-eyed perspective on life informs the 10 tracks on the new release. Produced by Jesse Noah Wilson and recorded in East Nashville, the new album features a cast of musical luminaries including Oliver Wood, James Pennebaker, Jay Bellerose, Jen Condos, Erik Slick, Erin Rae, Karl Denson and AJ Croce. The album combines nostalgic country-rock with distinctly modern lyricism-an apt contrast for the process of studying one's past in order to make a better future. Stand out tracks include a duet with Oliver Wood on "Friends", the folksy "Juniper Woodsmoke, the reflective "Learn to Love Myself and "Wheels Rolling," a windows-down, hit-the-gas banger that ends the album Bluhm's music career began in the Cow Hollow area of San Francisco, where she recorded two solo albums and co-founded Nicki Bluhm and The Gramblers. After gaining widespread attention for their "Van Sessions" on YouTube, in particular their cover of the Hall and Oates classic "I Can't Go For That" which has garnered nearly 4 million YouTube views, they toured internationally and recorded two albums as a band. Since embarking on her solo career, Bluhm has carved a niche for herself as a powerful and incisive writer as well as an unparalleled vocalist. In addition to her solo work, Bluhm is also a sought-after collaborator with an A-list of icons and tastemakers including The Wood Brothers, George Porter Jr., The Infamous Stringdusters and Phil Lesh.

Universal Blue/White/Black Marbled Limited - Michael Schenker - There are few rock guitarists on this planet who have had such a lasting influence on so many renowned musicians as Michael Schenker. With his outstandingly fluid style, inexhaustible wealth of ideas and instinctive feel for hooks and melodies, Michael Schenker is a living legend who, despite his longstanding and distinguished history, still impresses with his unflagging energy and drive. The blond axeman from Sarstedt began his international career in the early 1970s with the Scorpions, achieved worldwide fame after joining British rock group U.F.O. and then seamlessly continued his exceptional global success story under his own name, as well as with acts such as Michael Schenker Group (MSG for short), Temple Of Rock and Michael Schenker Fest. His newest album Universal will feature all the strengths of this exceptional musician: first-rate songs with anthemic melodies, catchy guitar riffs and inspiring solos. Like it's predecessor Immortal (2019), Universal was produced by Michael Schenker and Michael Voss (Lessmann/Voss, Mad Max) at Voss's Kidroom Studio. As we have come to expect from him, Schenker has once again enlisted a number of prestigious fellow musicians for the recording of his new studio production, among them, as main vocalist, Ronnie Romero (Rainbow, Vandenberg), who will also be MSG's frontman on their upcoming tour, Michael Kiske (Helloween), Ralf Scheepers (Primal Fear) and Graham Bonnet (ex-Rainbow), drummers Simon Phillips (Toto, The Who), Brian Tichy (Whitesnake, Foreigner), Bobby Rondinelli (Rainbow, Blue Öyster Cult) and Bodo Schopf (Eloy), as well as legendary bassists Bob Daisley (Black Sabbath), Barry Sparks (Malmsteen, Dokken) and Barend Courbois (Blind Guardian, Zakk Wylde), with Tony Carey as a very special guest. Compositional highlights abound on Universal, from the haunting opener 'Emergency' and the subsequent 'Under Attack' with it's casually driving groove to 'The Universe', featuring an atmospheric duet by Ronnie Romero and Gary Barden, 'Wrecking Ball', performed as brilliantly as ever by Ralf Scheepers, and 'London Calling' with it's homage to the British capital's musical spirit. The rock anthem 'A King Has Gone' and it's intro 'Calling Baal' both have a special significance: The track, sung by Helloween frontman Michael Kiske, is a tribute to the immortal Ronnie James Dio, already considered to be one of the most important and successful songs in Schenker's career to date, both musically and lyrically. No doubt about it: The title, artwork and new songs from Universal suit MSG as perfectly as his characteristic Flying V suits Michael Schenker!

"Fresh grief, like fresh love, has a way of sharpening our vision and bringing on painful clarifications. No matter how temporary we know these states to be, the vulnerability and transformation they demand can overpower the strongest among us.

Then there are the rare, fertile moments when both occur, when mourning and limerence heighten, complicate and explain each other; the songs that comprise Angel Olsens Big Time were forged in such a whiplash.

I cant say that Im sorry / when I dont feel so wrong anymore, the record begins, her voice softer and more open than ever, as if shes singing through a hard won smile. All the Good Times, a twangy banger with nods to JJ Cale, starts the album on a triumphant and bright note. The title song, Big Time, follows and continues the warm optimism. Guess I had to be losin to get here on time, she sings, a fearless love song co-written with her partner.

Big Time is an album about the expansive power of new love, but this brightness and optimism is tempered by a profound and layered sense of loss. During Olsens process of coming to terms with her queerness and confronting the traumas that had been keeping her from fully accepting herself, she felt it was time to come out to her parents, a hurdle shed been avoiding for some time.

Some experiences just make you feel as though youre five years old, no matter how wise or adult you think you are, she writes of that time. After that tearful but relieving conversation, she celebrated with her partner, their friends, oysters, and wine. Finally, at the ripe age of 34, I was free to be me.

Three days later, her father died; his funeral became the occasion for Olsen to introduce her partner to her family. Though she was fearful their presence as a newly out queer couple would be an additional symbol of loss, those days went peacefully, yet only two weeks later Olsen got the call that her mother was in the ER. Hospice came soon after, and a second funeral came quickly on the heels of the first. Another trip back to St. Louis, another grief to face, another deepening and intensification of this still-new love.

The shards of this griefthe shortening of her chance to finally be seen more fully by her parentsare scattered throughout the album. Its a hard time again, she sings on This is How It Works, pushing against the irrevocability of death, Tell me a story that will make me forget. Go Home, which begins with an almost numbed calm, slowly builds up to a wailing that comes up straight from the ground: I want to go home, go back to small things. I dont belong here. Nobody knows me.

You cant plan grief, you cant organize it or schedule it or know how youll feel when it comes. It just happens, and when it does sometimes its not what you thought it would be. Three weeks after her mothers funeral she was in the studio, recording this incredibly wise and tender new album.

Loss has long been a subject of Olsens elegiac songs, but few can write elegies with quite the reckless energy as she. If that bursting-at-the-seams, running downhill energy has come to seem intractable to her work, this album proves Olsen is now writing from a more rooted place of clarity. Shes working with an elastic, expansive mastery of her voiceboth sonically and artistically. These are songs not just about transformational mourning, but of finding freedom and joy in the privations as they come.

Playful bits of Tammy Wynette and Kitty Wells are here, too, but so are the complex orchestrations of her genre-bending 2019 record, All Mirrors. While that record was full of dramatic shifts and twists, here the surprises come in their simplicitya slow swell of strings, instrumentation that cycles like a storm, or sparkling horns in a light-flooded break-up ballad.

While the spritely nature of her last EP, Aisles, may have signaled Olsens turn deeper into the electronic direction of her last All Mirrors, theres hardly a synth in sight here. Jonathan Wilson, served as co-producer and also mixed the tracks, while Drew Erickson played piano, organ, and scored the string arrangements. Emily Elhaj, Olsens longtime bandmate, was a consistent collaborator as well, on the bass throughout.

And I cant fit into the past that youre used to, I refuse to, she sings as a wraithlike piano scaffolds her hopeful voice on Ghost On. Forget the old dreams, she rejoices on Go Home, I got a new thing. Darkness inherently suggests depth, but it takes a much wiser writer to find meaning and complexity in the luminous place that Big Time occupies. Chasing the Sun ends the record in a smiling, romantic place, a verdant crescendo rising as she pines: Write a postcard to you / when youre in the other room/ Im just writing to say that I cant find my clothes / If youre lookin for something to do.

The burning of her earliest work is still here, of course, but this time shes freed from the longing / for one moment to last and shes ready to walk through the fires / of all earthly desires.

2020's A Hero's Death saw Fontaines D.C. land a #2 album in the UK, receive nominations at the GRAMMYs, BRITs and Ivor Novello Awards, and sell out London's iconic Alexandra Palace. Now the band return with their third record in as many years: Skinty Fia. Used colloquially as an expletive, the title roughly translates from the Irish language into English as 'the damnation of the deer'; the spelling crassly anglicized, and its meaning diluted through generations. Part bittersweet romance, part darkly political triumph - the songs ultimately form a long-distance love letter, one that laments an increasingly privatized culture in danger of going the way of the extinct Irish giant deer.

Archers of Loaf almost called it quits after All the Nations Airports due to the strain of touring and the rut of the album cycle (i.e., make record, make video, do interviews, tour, tour, tour; repeat) but decided they would make one more album and see how they felt after that process. They again enlisted the help of Brian Paulson to record the album that became White Trash Heroes. On this album the band added keyboards to several songs as well as vocoder, and debuted the lead vocals of Matt Gentling on the track "I.N.S." "Banging on a Dead Drum" found all the members swapping instruments and some of the worst cowbell ever attempted. The band pulled out all the stops to keep it's members engaged, but unfortunately, it wasn't enough and the band decided to make the fall tour of 1998 it's final outing.

Originally released in 1972, A Message From The People remains one of Charles' most celebrated albums, as well as the most socially-conscious work of his six decade career. The record directly confronts societal ills of poverty and injustice while offering a universal message of brotherhood and hope for peace; topics that are as relevant today as they were 50 years ago.   The album includes such classic tracks as "They'll Be No Peace On Earth Without All Men As One," "Abraham, Martin and John," the Gospel infused "Lift Every Voice and Sing" and "Heaven Help Us All. " The album also includes Ray's recording of "Hey Mister," which was played during a Congressional joint hearing in 1972 to speak on behalf of common citizens to a government that was widely seen as ignoring their needs. Perhaps the most impactful track on this album is Ray's iconic version of "America the Beautiful," which quickly became our second National Anthem and has inspired countless generations since it's release 50 years ago
